Rebecca’s Coffee House

Craft beer or wine?
Gragnano, a fizzy red wine that Italians drink with pizza

Pedigree?
Tufts University and Oxford University

Favorite play?
Whichever one I’m working on at the time

Directing secret weapon?
I make a cheat-sheet of the plot events in fragmentary
phrases. It helps me focus on getting the story crystal-clear.

Directing style?
Let the other talented people in the room have all the space they need to be maximally creative.

Best advice for actors?
Don’t do it if it feels fake. And only tell the truth.

Christopher Ashley

Artistic Director
La Jolla Playhouse

Neighborhood?
Pacific Beach

Favorite local restaurant?
Barbarella/Tapenade/Tractor Room

Craft beer or wine?
Scotch

Pedigree?
Yale University. I roomed with Doug Wright, who won the Pulitzer Prize for the Playhouse-born I Am My Own Wife

Favorite play?
Classics: Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream; more eccentric: Cloud Nine, Ionesco’s The Chairs

Directing secret weapon?
Find what is comic in the most serious moments, and what is serious within the jokes

Directing style?
I hope to reinvent my directing style to suit the material.

Best advice for actors?
Listen.
