I Tried It: ElliptiGO

The ride was challenging and worked different muscles, including my lower quadriceps, making for a great workout.

I ride my bike almost everywhere, clock in weekly 80-mile rides, and dork out when new cycling accessories debut. Yes, I’m a gearhead. But as much as I love my own two-wheeler, I was excited to try the ElliptiGO, an outdoor elliptical bicycle that combines the movements of running, cycling, and the elliptical. Boston Marathon champ Meb Keflezighi credits the machine with helping him run his fastest marathon ever.

I met the ElliptiGO team at their Solana Beach headquarters for a trial spin in preparation for the Silver Strand 10 Miler. Though riding it was fairly intuitive, my first foray was bumpy. You’re positioned much higher than you would be on a bike, and the first few pedal strokes took some getting used to.

On race day, I passed rollerbladers easily and didn’t tumble like I thought I might, but grabbing a drink of water was surprisingly hard. On a bike, your weight is planted on the seat, making it easier to go hands-free, but attempt the same action on the ElliptiGO and you’ll likely crash. The best I could do was coast and grab a quick sip.

The ride was challenging and worked different muscles, including my lower quadriceps, making for a great workout.

In the end, I crossed the line at fourth place—not too shabby, considering the first place rider was a retired track and field pro and ElliptiGO staffers were second and third. How’s that for reinventing the wheel?
