I’m making it official. Summer is now here. Why? Because I just bought my first stone fruit of the season from Smit Orchards at the Rancho Santa Fe farmers market. Sure, you’ve seen peaches, apricots, plums, and nectarines at the big grocery stores but who knows where they’re from. Mexico? Chile? The fruit I bought is from Central California (to be specific, Linden, Calif., near Stockton) and it’s picked ripe and ready to eat.

So, now it’s time to start thinking about plum upside down cake, peach cobbler, apricot tarts, and nectarine ice cream. Smoothies will be a lot richer in flavor. And, barbecues will get more interesting with grilled chicken and apricots. In fact, how about a stone fruit kabob, lightly glazed with cinnamon honey from Temecula Valley Honey to caramelize on the grill?
