Border Report: Hike the Golden Hill

Chances are you’ve seen it without realizing it, even if you’ve never been to Tijuana: Cerro Colorado, the Golden Hill. At 1,084 feet, its peak is the highest point within the border city, making it easily visible from several spots around San Diego. Traditionally overlooked by most Tijuanese and neglected by the local government, in recent years it’s become a popular spot for hikers of all levels, thanks in part to the eponymous Facebook group launched by a collective of students from Universidad Autónoma de Baja California.

Hike It Out!

Baja Travesies and Cerro TJ lead groups to the summit Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Or join an organized trek with Cerro Colorado. The round trip along the moderate trail takes one to three hours, depending on your pace. Regulars recommend bringing along two liters of water, comfortable shoes, and a flashlight for night climbs.
