San Diego Artists Paint the Town with ‘Art of the Horse’

The Torrie Horse art exhibit is part of the Breeders' Cup Festival

By Sarah Pfledderer

When the Breeders’ Cup makes its Del Mar debut November 3 and 4, the iconic Torrie Horse that sits atop the championship trophies—replicating Giovanni de Bologna’s original bronze sculpture from the 1580s—won’t be reserved for the victors only.

As part of the weeklong Breeders’ Cup Festival October 28 to November 4, San Diego artists are painting the town with life-size renditions of the memento, embellished with nods to thoroughbred racing, San Diego culture, and the Breeders’ Cup itself.

Catch sight of the Art of the Horse installation throughout greater San Diego (including Cheryl Pelly’s Alta Vista, pictured here, on Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach) or hedge your bets to bring one of the beauts home in a charity auction following the races.
