What is a Gold IRA?

An individual Retirement Account (IRA) is a tax-advantaged account that helps people save for retirement. They come in many forms, such as a Roth IRA, traditional IRA, and gold IRA.

A gold IRA permits investors to transform their paper assets into physical gold or other precious metals. Investors must hold these retirement accounts separately from traditional or standard IRAs. Gold IRAs are also called precious metals IRAs.

Gold IRAs are specialized IRAs that allow investors to hold and store gold coins, bullions, and other precious metals as qualified retirement plans. As a result, these IRAs need one IRA custodian — usually a brokerage firm or bank that manages the account.

For more information about precious metals IRAs, here is a detailed IRA frequently asked questions section:

What types of precious metals can you include in a Gold IRA?

A precious metals IRA can store four types — gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. To qualify for an IRA, the gold products must have a minimum purity of 99.5%, the silver must be 99.9% pure, and both platinum and palladium must at least be 99.5% pure.

Can I open a new Gold IRA with a contribution?

Yes. Also, an investor can make annual contributions up to the approved IRS limits. For 2023, the total contributions to a precious metals or gold IRA cannot be more than $6,500. If the investor is 50 or older, it’ll be $7,500.

Who is eligible for a Traditional IRA?

With a traditional IRA, contributions are tax-deductible (at least for most people) and only subjected to income taxes at the withdrawal time. An investor must have earned income to be eligible for traditional IRAs.

What are the fees associated with a Gold IRA?

There are several fees associated with an IRA gold account. For instance, an IRA custodian and administrator typically charge application and processing fees. Other fees include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Commissions

  • Mark-Ups

  • Transaction Fee

  • Wiring Fee

  • Cost Of The Precious Metal

  • Annual Maintenance Fee

  • Storage Fee

  • Miscellaneous Fee

Is there a minimum investment for Gold IRAs?

The IRS does not have a required minimum investment when opening a precious metals IRA. However, most gold companies set their minimum investment requirements.

What is a gold IRA rollover?

Investors with an IRA, 401(k), or another retirement account type can convert part of it into a precious metals investment IRA. The precious metals IRA rollover will permit them to buy and purchase physical precious metals, such as gold and silver coins, bars, and bullion.

What is a gold IRA transfer?

A gold or precious metals IRA transfer includes moving funds from a current IRA custodian to a new IRA custodian. When an investor transfers money from one retirement account to another, the account holder will not receive any funds. Instead, the funds are a direct transfer between the third parties without the account holder’s involvement.

Are there penalties for moving my IRA or 401(k)?

An investor may roll over money from their 401(k) to an IRA without facing penalties but must deposit their 401(k) funds within 60 days. Though, there are tax consequences if they roll over money from a traditional 401(k) plan to a Roth IRA.

Can I have more than one IRA?

There is no set or limit to the number of IRAs an investor can own. However, there is an actual limit to the amount of money one can contribute to their IRAs, regardless of whether they have Roth or traditional IRAs.

How long does it take to roll over a traditional IRA into a Gold or Silver IRA?

Typically, the rollover process would not take up to 60 days to complete and accomplish. If it does, tax penalties will be charged, especially for an indirect rollover.

When will I be eligible for distributions from my Gold IRA?

According to the rules set by the IRS, an investor is only eligible for distributions once they turn 59 ½. At that time, they will need to pay the income taxes due on any withdrawals, and they can liquidate the physical metals in their IRA account for cash or take physical possession of them without any penalty.

Can I choose any custodian and storage company to store my metals?

Most IRA precious metals companies have partner custodians, which allows them to offer a package deal. However, the investor still has the final choice on which custodian and storage company should hold the physical gold they own. That means they can choose a different custodian that they deem offers better conditions and terms.

Are gold IRA fees tax-deductible?

Yes, all the annual and set-up IRA fees are tax-deductible expenses.

Do I have to invest all my money at once into a gold IRA?

While an investor is free to do so, it is not recommended. It is always safe to diversify a retirement portfolio and not solely rely on one investment vehicle.

Can I purchase gold with my Roth IRA?

Investors may use their Roth IRA account to purchase and own gold and other IRA-eligible precious metals.

What is a gold self-directed individual retirement account?

A gold self-directed IRA is a retirement account wherein investors can safely store and hold physical gold. This IRA account typically has higher fees than Roth or traditional IRAs that invest solely in mutual funds, bonds, and stocks.

What is a silver self-directed individual retirement account?

A silver self-directed IRA is much similar to a gold one — just that an investor can store genuine silver in this one.

What are platinum and palladium self-directed individual retirement accounts?

These are almost identical to gold and silver IRAs, only that these can hold IRS-approved platinum and palladium bullion, bars, and coins.

Can I move just some of my IRA assets into precious metals?

IRA owners and holders may transfer money from their existing IRA to fund their precious metals account.

Can I buy gold with my work retirement plan?

Those with a retirement plan from their previous employer may roll over the funds. From that employer-sponsored retirement plan, they may transfer the retirement assets to a self-directed IRA to buy precious metals.

Can I handle my ira precious metal storage on my own?

Not necessarily. The IRS requires that investors store precious metal assets owned by an IRA in a trustee or custodian, which should be a bank, a savings or loan association, a federally-insured credit union, or any IRS-approved entity.

However, several IRA holders use a ‘loophole’ in the US Tax Code that permits the holder to self-store the metals using an LLC IRA, Checkbook Control IRA, or Home Storage IRA.

Are there any precious metals I can’t invest in?

The IRS only enables the addition of precious metals that have met their minimum purity requirements.

How do I liquidate the precious metals in my gold IRA?

Investors may sell the gold or precious metals in their IRA at any time without facing any tax penalties, provided that they do not withdraw the cash out of their IRA.

If I pass away, what will happen to my gold IRA?

If an investor passes away, the custodian will transfer their precious metals IRA and the associated retirement assets to the beneficiaries they listed. The investor may choose the beneficiaries when they open the account and can change them at any time.

Can I designate a charity or house of worship as my beneficiary?

Yes. The investor can designate organizations instead of people as their beneficiaries. Specific IRS-recognized charities only qualify. So do various houses of worship like mosques, churches, temples, and synagogues.

Can I put more money into my gold IRA after I start it?

Yes. Investors may continue adding more IRA funds into their accounts. A transfer or rollover from another retirement plan account or IRA is possible. The investor may also make annual contributions — albeit there is an age restriction regarding how much they can contribute.

Am I free to change the metals inside my gold IRA?

An investor can always change and rearrange their assets in the account. That includes swaps, transfers, trades, and sales. As long as no withdrawals are involved, there will be no tax implications.

Will my precious metals be safe and insured?

So long as the investors choose trusted and reliable self-directed IRA custodians, their assets should be safe. Major custodians tend to have armed security, surveillance, and state-of-the-art security systems.

How are my yearly gold ira fees paid?

Investors can quickly pay their annual precious metals IRA fees through credit card or check. They also have the option to pay with cash inside the account. Note that out-of-the-pocket fees are always tax-deductible.

What if I miss a payment?

The custodian will charge a late fee for any missed payments. Also, if an investor falls majorly behind their payments, the custodian will need to sell some of the assets to pay the missed fees.

Can I look at my metals?

Yes. Depending on the storage facility they choose, an investor can schedule an appointment to see and view their precious metals. There are also ones that offer online webcams.

Final Thoughts – Gold IRA FAQ

Gold IRAs are typically defined as alternative asset investments, which means they are not traded on any public exchange and are deemed relatively safe. With the stock market’s volatility and the daunting times of uncertainty, investing in gold is an investor’s best bet to diversify their retirement portfolio and secure their assets.

The Secret to a Home That Feels Just Right

Behind every beautiful space is a thoughtful process, and ASID San Diego is helping homeowners understand the value of professional design.

The Secret to a Home That Feels Just Right
Courtesy of ASID

A perfectly designed home rarely happens by accident. Those kitchens that feel effortless and rooms that seem to tell a story the second you walk in? They’re usually the work of someone who knows exactly what they’re doing.

It’s knowing which ideas will actually work, which materials will hold up over time, and how to turn a collection of choices into a space that feels intentional. That’s where a professional interior designer comes in.

For the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) California San Diego Chapter, the goal is to help people see interior design as more than just the finished look. Behind every well-designed space is a process built on technical expertise. Designers are educated in everything from professional software and construction details to building codes, space planning, materials, and functionality.

Courtesy of ASID

“People don’t always realize how much goes on behind the scenes,” Kirsten Recce , current president of the ASID California San Diego Chapter, says. “Our designers are not just doing furniture placement and color selection and picking out new fluffy pillows. That’s not what they’re trained for.”

ASID members bring formal education, continued learning, and industry knowledge to their projects, helping create spaces that are not only beautiful, but designed to work. A paint color that changes completely depending on the lighting. A material that looks beautiful in a showroom but doesn’t make sense for everyday life. A layout that photographs well but doesn’t function for the people living there. These are the details where professional guidance can make all the difference.

Still, one of the biggest misconceptions about hiring an interior designer is that it’s reserved for massive renovations, luxury homes, or people who already know exactly what they want. The process can feel intimidating. Where do you begin? Is a designer worth the investment? What if you only need help with one room?

ASID’s answer: start with one hour.

ASID’s Spruce Up events break down one of the biggest barriers between homeowners and professional design: knowing where to begin. Held twice a year, the community program gives homeowners the chance to work directly with an ASID designer through a one-hour, $125 consultation in their own home. Whether you’re looking for advice on furniture placement, window treatments, kitchen and bath updates, remodeling ideas, vacation rentals, color selections or something else entirely, the upcoming September 2026 event offers an approachable way to get expert guidance before committing to a full project. Signups are open through Sept. 7, with consultations taking place Sept. 21 through Oct. 31. Proceeds benefit ASID San Diego’s educational and community programs. Register here!

Courtesy of ASID

“It’s a great opportunity for people who are in that exploratory phase,” Recce says. “Maybe they’re not sure they want to hire an interior designer yet, or they think it sounds daunting or expensive. This gives them a chance to discover what working with a designer is actually like.”

Design is personal. A good designer isn’t just creating a beautiful room; they’re helping create a space that fits the way someone lives.

“We’re a resource to all of San Diego County,” Recce says. “It doesn’t cost anything to pick up the phone and call and ask. We’ll answer.”

Theranostics: New Hope for Patients with Metastatic Cancers

Innovative treatment could offer cancer patients new options with fewer side effects

Chemotherapy and radiation have long been considered gold standards of cancer treatment, but they can cause severe side effects. A promising new approach called theranostics—a combination of “therapeutics” and “diagnostics”—could offer patients with certain types of metastatic cancers new hope. It’s a two-step process that uses a drug that binds to specific receptors on cancer cells. Advanced imaging detects this radioisotope, allowing doctors to then use a second radioisotope that binds to the cancer cells and destroys them. Click here to learn more about how specialists at Scripps Cancer Center are using theranostics.

Nearly everyone experiences a sleepless night once in a while. But for those with a circadian sleep disorder, being well-rested can feel out of reach. A circadian sleep disorder occurs when a person’s internal clock doesn’t align with their desired or socially required sleep schedule. This can significantly impact quality of life, mental health and physical well-being. Scripps Circadian Sleep Disorders Clinic, launched in 2019, was the first of its kind in the state. Its specialists diagnose and treat conditions like delayed sleep phase disorder, shift work sleep disorder and non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder. Many patients have spent years—or even decade —thinking there was no hope for their sleep behavior. A solution can be life-changing. Exploring the Frontiers of Biotechnology: How Research-Focused Companies Support Scientific Discovery

Biotechnology is one of the most dynamic and rapidly evolving fields in modern science.

Exploring the Frontiers of Biotechnology: How Research-Focused Companies Support Scientific Discovery
Sam Sulek, co-owner of NewBioRX | Courtesy of NewBioRX

From advancements in cellular biology and molecular research to innovations that deepen our understanding of complex biological systems, biotechnology continues to influence how researchers explore some of science’s most important questions.

While major discoveries often capture headlines, the process behind those breakthroughs receives far less attention. Scientific progress depends on a vast network of researchers, laboratories, manufacturers, and specialized organizations working together to support ongoing investigation and discovery.

The Growing Importance of Biotechnology

In recent years, biotechnology has moved beyond the walls of research institutions and into mainstream conversation. Increased access to scientific information, educational content, and expert commentary has sparked growing public interest in the biological sciences.

Topics once discussed primarily within academic circles are now reaching broader audiences through podcasts, documentaries, digital media, and online communities. As a result, more people are developing an appreciation for the research, experimentation, and innovation that drive scientific advancement.

This growing visibility has transformed biotechnology from a largely specialized field into a subject of interest for educators, innovators, investors, and curious observers alike.

The Hidden Infrastructure Behind Discovery

Scientific breakthroughs often capture public attention, but the infrastructure that makes those breakthroughs possible rarely receives the same recognition. Behind every new discovery are years of investigation, testing, analysis, and refinement.

Behind nearly every research project is a network of laboratories, suppliers, technical specialists, and research-focused organizations working together to support scientific exploration. Laboratory infrastructure, specialized materials, quality standards, and reliable methodologies all contribute to the integrity of the research process.

When these foundational elements are in place, researchers can focus on generating insights, exploring new ideas, and building upon existing knowledge. Although much of this work occurs behind the scenes, it plays a critical role in helping science move forward.

Why Discovery Depends on More Than Researchers Alone

As biotechnology continues to evolve, research-focused organizations have become increasingly important contributors to the broader scientific ecosystem.

Among them is NewBioRx, a company operating within the biotechnology and life sciences sector. Like many organizations operating within the broader research ecosystem, NewBioRx contributes to the network of suppliers, laboratories, and scientific stakeholders that help support ongoing research efforts.

As scientific research becomes increasingly sophisticated, organizations that help support the research environment contribute to a culture where innovation can continue to thrive. Their work may not always be visible to the public, but it forms part of the foundation that enables scientific progress.

Why Science Is Reaching Wider Audiences

One of the most notable developments in recent years has been the growing public fascination with science and human biology.

Scientific concepts that were once primarily discussed within research settings are now reaching wider audiences through educational content, podcasts, digital media, and online communities. People are becoming increasingly interested not only in scientific outcomes, but also in the process of discovery itself.

The growing visibility of science has also created new connections between scientific communities and broader audiences. Individuals who operate across multiple worlds—including fitness, media, and life sciences—have helped introduce scientific topics to audiences that may not have engaged with them previously.

One example is Sam Sulek, co-founder of NewBioRx, whose involvement across fitness culture and the life sciences sector reflects the growing intersection between public curiosity and scientific exploration.

As co-founder of NewBioRx, he has helped champion a research-focused approach to scientific inquiry while supporting broader conversations around scientific literacy and discovery.

As scientific discovery becomes increasingly collaborative, public attention is beginning to extend beyond individual breakthroughs and toward the broader ecosystem that makes those breakthroughs possible. From researchers and laboratories to the organizations that support them, scientific progress remains a collective effort built on curiosity, expertise, and long-term commitment.

It’s estimated that 44% of women in the U.S. have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, but many don’t know it. The disease often has no symptoms, and when symptoms do present, they can appear similar to many other conditions. High blood pressure increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, so it’s critical that it’s detected and treated early. And for women at risk of developing high blood pressure, prevention is key.
