Mission Hills This Month

First week in May
Cinema Under the Stars summer season

Farmers’ Market, 3–6 p.m.

Fort Oak

After receiving acclaim for Trust in Hillcrest, chef Brad Wise hauled a 7,000-pound grill into this former Ford dealership for his third restaurant. Expect more of his signature wood-fired dishes, like duroc pork chop and whole branzino, along with elegant seafood towers and inventive cocktails. fortoaksd

Copper Top Coffee & Donuts

Josh McCorkle and Brian Iwakiri transformed the shuttered Wienerschnitzel on Washington Street into a walk-up coffee and dessert shop. Get the Campfire donut topped with homemade marshmallow, chocolate, and graham crackers. If you’re not in a hurry, there’s a patio on the side to stay awhile. coppertopcoffee

Harper’s Topiary Garden

Edna Harper has lovingly sculpted the shrubs on the hill fronting her home into over 50 living statues. Also called the "Edna Scissorhands" garden, it’s become a local attraction.

Izakaya Masa

We’d be remiss not to include this classic late-night spot. It’s a favorite of local chefs and residents who come for the casual Japanese bar fare, like takoyaki (fried octopus fritters), sushi, and ramen.
