The sun wasn’t the only thing that was heating up at the Volunteers of America Southwest (VOASW) Annual Celebrity Golf Classic. Professional LPGA golfer Tiffany Joh was there to smoke some drives and sink some putts with the attendees. There was also a dinner that included wine tastings, live auction, awards and prizes to help the VOASW raise over $140,000. All proceeds went to helping more than 6,000 families of homeless and disabled veterans, adults with addiction and mental health challenges, struggling seniors, and young children with unique needs through education, housing and behavioral health programs.

The San Diego Foundation celebrated 44 years in a big way. The organization awarded more than $52 million in fiscal year 2019; they helped 1,740 nonprofit organizations with 5,667 individual grants to a variety of areas including: arts and culture, education, health and human society, youth services, environment, and civil society. More specifically, the Hervey Family and the Donna Knox Sefton Family provided $10 million for a new library in the Mission Hills and Hillcrest neighborhood, and The Foundation launched an impact investing partnership to help build affordable homes for low-income families. The Foundation has been dedicated to providing effective leadership for donors, partners, nonprofits and the many San Diegans whose lives are impacted by charitable work in the community since 1975.

“San Diego County is a region rich with generous philanthropists and changemakers, as well as unique challenges that require strong leadership,” says Mark Stuart, president & CEO of The San Diego Foundation. “As we look toward the future, we are focused on how we can further increase joy for the donors we support and the communities we serve.”

Cox Communications gave a generous gift of $50,000 to the USS Midway Museum “No Child Left Ashore Scholarship Fund” which helps fund the on-board programs put on by the Midway’s education department. The support is nothing new because of Cox’s long-standing relationship with the Midway and their support of the USS Midway’s STEM Education Onboard Field Trip Experience and Virtual Field Trip Program through an annual partnership program.

“Cox has a strong commitment to supporting youth, education and the military to help better our community,” says Sam Attisha, senior vice president and region manager for Cox Communications, who previously served as a board member of the USS Midway Museum. “The Midway and its programs are making an impact in all of those areas, and we’re excited to partner with them in those efforts.”
