The 10th Annual Red Shoe Day raised an estimated $253,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. An enthusiastic and record-breaking corps of 1,600 volunteers collected donations at about 200 intersections dotted throughout the County. The money will help families with a child in treatment at local hospitals. Ronald McDonald House provides meals, lodging, and emotional support while the child is in the hospital.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society just named its 2019 Man & Woman of the Year, Gordon Cooke of Carmel Valley and Katy Temple of Little Italy. The winners and six other fundraisers collectively brought in a total of $550,000 in just ten weeks. LLS focuses on curing blood cancer and helping patients and their families live better lives.
Promises2Kids raised more than $1.25 million for local foster youth during the 11th annual Dream On Concert Gala. More than 450 of San Diego’s who’s who gathered at Papa Doug and Geniya Manchester’s Foxhill Estate in La Jolla. Guests enjoyed a reception, dinner, live auction, and private concert by Don Felder, formerly of The Eagles. The concert gala was catered by Executive Chef Jeffrey Strauss and Pamplemousse Grille. Promises2Kids provides support and resources to children from the time they enter foster care until they are adults.

Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship
Have you faced an ethical dilemma at school, work, or within your group of friends? How did you respond? Students in grades 9-12 (graduating classes of 2020 - 2023) residing and enrolled in school in San Diego, Orange and Imperial Counties are invited to apply. The assigned topic is "The Importance of Ethics and Integrity in our Community." Essays should not exceed 400 words, or approximately one page. Describe your inner-conflict and the resolution tactics you employed, and how it impacted or relates to your community. Five scholarships will be awarded in the following amounts: $1,500; $1,250; $1,000; $750; $500. Winning scholarship recipients will be recognized and receive funds towards college tuition and expenses at the Annual Torch Awards for Ethics celebratory reception on October 9th. Nominate a Hero
The annual Real Heroes Awards, hosted by the American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties, is looking for heroes. The heroic act must have occurred on or after January 1, 2018, or can be on-going, and the hero must live or work in San Diego County or Imperial County. Categories cover youth, adult, animal, service organizations, and more. Nominations are due July 31. The Real Heroes Awards Breakfast is scheduled for Friday, October 11 on the U.S.S. Midway Museum.
