Good morning! Will you be attending National Philanthropy Day today? San Diego Magazine has a table—please come say hello!
And now for some good news…
The Boys and Girls Foundation of San Diego has awarded a $4,000 grant to support the San Diego Oasis Literacy Tutoring Program. This program pairs over 800 students with nearly 600 older adult tutors for weekly, one-on-one learning and self-esteem building. The grant will buy books for the low-income, at-risk elementary school students to take home and keep. "We call this program the grandparent effect because we offer these young students a dedicated person who has the time, the wisdom and the patience to make a difference in their young lives," says Simona Valanciute, President & CEO of San Diego Oasis.
Betty Mohelbrock, the founder of Reading Legacies, has been named a 2018 L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth Honoree. For the past 13 years, Women of Worth have been selected, out of thousands of nominations, for their commitment to serving their communities. Mohelbrock’s Reading Legacies is a nonprofit that supports relationships with children of incarcerated parents through "the simple act of reading aloud." L’Oréal Paris will donate $10,000 to Reading Legacies. Beginning November 1, the public can vote for one inspirational woman, and the winner—the National Honoree—will receive an additional $25,000 for her organization. Vote here for our local San Diego Woman of Worth, Betty Mohelbrock, and help our kids at Reading Legacies.
Local company Classy, an online fundraising software for nonprofits, hit a major milestone last week. Nonprofits on the platform have collectively raised $1 billion. That includes more than 10 million donations from over 190 countries. "Since we launched in 2011, nonprofits on Classy have addressed some of the most pressing issues of our time—from major events like disease outbreaks, disasters, mass shootings, and social movements, to mainstay world challenges like environmental issues, child trafficking, human rights, and animal rights," says Scot Chisholm, Classy CEO and Co-Founder. "We’re humbled to play a small role in our customers’ tireless efforts to make the world a better place, and we couldn’t be more excited to partner with them to raise the next $10 billion and beyond."
The New Children’s Museum’s annual gala is November 10 at the multilevel museum downtown. Studio 200 on Island will be a "Totally 80s Birthday Bash," celebrating the totally tubular decade that NCM first opened in San Diego. Costumes are encouraged.
