Home on the Sea

Cardiff-by-the-Sea’s Aperture House isn’t your average Craftsman next door. With ceilings that soar up to 36 feet and a veritable maze of slanted walls and full-length windows, the building has come a long way under new owners Marie Tartar and Steve Eilenberg's stewardship. Just about every surface has been replaced in the interest of restoring the home to all its original, modernist glory. "You used to be able to see [the house] from I-5, before the trees grew up," Eilenberg said. "My wife and I walked by it many times before we bought it. Because it spirals upward and has many steps, we thought it was a church."
