The Best Spots for Beach Bonfires in San Diego

Grab some firewood and gather round these fire pits for a toasty time on the sand.

Ocean Beach

When you’ve had your fill of slacklining, acro-yoga, and peanut butter whisky, it’s time to pull on your blanket poncho and light one up (a bonfire, that is!). The fire rings are located near the dog beach, close enough to Newport Avenue, the pier, the sea spray, and the din of drum circles to afford a very O.B. experience after dark.

Tourmaline Surfing Park Beach

Tourmaline is as much a jewel by night as by day. Drop your longboard in the sand and get a fire started so it’s warm by the time you’re slipping out of your wetsuit and into a sweat suit.

Moonlight Beach

The sublime shores of Encinitas are all the more enchanting at night, especially accompanied by a bonfire on Moonlight Beach; fire pits are near the lifeguard towers.

Shoreline Park

How does this sound: The downtown skyline twinkling in the distance as a bonfire warms the bay breeze. For exactly that, head to the aptly named Shoreline Park that stretches more than a mile along the bay side of Shelter Island.

La Jolla Shores

A half-dozen fire pits can be found on these sandy shores, so there’s no need to abandon a family beach day after sunset.

Coronado Beach

Mica-rich sands provide a, uh, golden opportunity for lounging fireside on the shores near the Hotel Del Coronado.

Mission Beach

Warm up after the sun sets (and maybe for a night out in Mission Beach or Pacific Beach) at any of the fire rings spaced out along the beach, accessed via the boardwalk.

Mission Bay

You can opt for tons of places along the shores of Mission Bay for your next beachy blaze, including Crown Point, Bonita Cove, Mission Point, Ski Beach, Playa Pacifica Park, and South Shores Park. But to share the cozy-ness with your pup, you’ll want to head to the wide-open, dog-friendly expanses of Fiesta Island.

Oceanside

The beaches by the harbor as well as near the pier provide fire rings, an iconic backdrop and, pretty reliably, epic sunsets.
