On June 16, dozens of pups will sport a new kind of leash. Doused in ocean water and carving waves, the canines of this year’s seventh annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition will draw thousands of spectators. But it wouldn’t be a party without philanthropy: The event will benefit the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (ASPCA). With 10 minutes to catch two waves, each canine competitor will be scored on confidence level, length of ride, and overall ability to "grip it and rip it." Imperial Beach Mayor Jim Janney is one of four judges. Add onsite food trucks and sponsor giveaways, and what better way to spend your Saturday?
