Dreadlocked pirates, latex-clad superheroes and nerds in glasses flood the streets of San Diego once again this summer for Comic-Con International. This fantasy extravaganza, which consists of four days packed with panels, meet and greets, and exhibits, runs July 21-24 and is already completely sold out. But if you're a dedicated fan who dropped the ball on registering for events, there are still plenty of ways to experience the magic that is Comic-Con, including these five Comic-Con themed events:
1. Munky King Presents "The Black Ball" at BASIC
Thursday July 21st, 9 p.m.-2 a.m.
BASIC Urban Kitchen + Bar is hosting a themed soiree to celebrate the 1st Annual Designer Toy Awards created by Clutter magazine. If you're an anime fan looking to dance the night away with fellow enthusiasts, you won't want to miss this event. The first 50 guests will receive free gift bags with goodies from Munky King, a designer toy store in Los Angeles. The Black Ball includes mixes by DJ Colbi.1 and DJ R-Rated, as well as a live painting done by renowned artist Luke Chueh.
Friday July 22nd, 8 p.m.-1 a.m.
How would you like to spend a night in the San Diego Harbor on one of the ships used in the filming of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies? This pirate-themed party on the HMS Providence features lookalikes playing parts from the film. This is the third, and according to the event website, the last, Marked Men Party to hit San Diego, so get your tickets before they run out. And get ready to "drink up me hearties, yo ho!" Tickets start at $50.
Friday July 22nd, 7-10:30 p.m.
Nerd is the new chic, at least at this party hosted by Geek Girls Network at the Vin Deh Syrah lounge. Pull out your pocket protector and brush up on your HMTL coding skills before you head over to the Geekout for dancing and free give-aways. Tickets are available online for $5 on a first-come first-serve basis, check out the GGN Facebook page to RSVP.
Saturday July 23rd, Noon-9 p.m.
This out-of-this-world pub crawl takes you to multiple Gaslamp hotspots. Not only do you get in to these bars without paying a cover, you'll find drink specials at many of the participating locations. Costumes are not required to participate, but you'll be exposed as a mortal. General admissions tickets start at just over $15, including fees.
5. Solamar SyFy/E! Entertainment Party
Saturday July 23rd. 8:30 p.m.
One of the hottest parties affiliated with Comic-Con, this event isn’t open to the public, but if you’re interested in some top-notch celeb-spotting, you’re in luck. Hotel Solamar is rolling out a red carpet on J Street and roping off the whole block between 6th and 7th. Get there as early as 8:30 p.m. to see the A-list stars who turn out for this exclusive soiree, or reserve a booth looking out at the street at J Six for a front-row seat.
