Very Important Taco: Spicy Octopus Taco at Ta’cul

A humble strip mall restaurant serves up a flavorful pulpo

By Troy Johnson

For many San Diegans over the age of 30, two of the scariest words in the English language are “Pacific Beach.” But Ta’cul is a safe distance from the eternal collegiate happy hour.

The sunny little restaurant in an unassuming strip mall is the first venture from German Feuchter and his wife, Melissa, and he treats everyone who walks through the door like a long-lost relative. He’ll walk you through the menu, take your order, and then cook the food himself.

The spicy octopus taco is the star (though the birria and gobernador keep it close). Cheese is grilled until it forms a caramelized crepe of sorts, then it’s laid into the corn tortilla. Medallions of octopus are grilled, then tossed with bell peppers, garlic, onions, and hot sauce for the promised spice.
