Here’s the latest roundup of news happening in San Diego’s food world:
Searsucker’s Carmel Valley location is going to close on October 30. Searsucker was originally founded by local celebrity chef Brian Malarkey, and the restaurant concept bought by Hakkasan Group in 2014. Hakkasan owns nightclubs such as Omnia and high-end restaurants around the world.
Jimbo’s just had the grand opening for its new store in Del Mar Highlands Town Center. It’s the first grocery store on the West Coast to have a water aisle that’s entirely plastic-free. The store also has an organic salad bar, a deli, pizza and taco station, and lots of prepared meals to take home.
San Diego Restaurant Week kicks off next Sunday, and lasts through Sunday, September 29. More than 180 local restaurants are participating this year.
Carlsbad got its first food hall with the opening of the Windmill Food Hall. There’s 14 vendors serving everything from Thai food to lobster rolls, grilled cheese and tacos.
The founder of the I Love Poke Festival is hosting a new event,"Luau Cadia," on September 29 at Priority Public House in Leucadia, which features a home-chef poke competition.
Speaking of raw fish, Water Grill is launching a new sushi menu this week. Created by chef Brian Okada, the menu features sushi with unconventional ingredients, like a king salmon roll with hazelnuts, and shucked oysters topped with uni, three kinds of fish roe and a quail egg (pictured above).
It’s harvest season in Temecula, and Ponte Winery is hosting its 17th annual Grape Stomp on Sunday, September 22. The highlight is the grape-stomping competition, where contestants stomp on grapes in a wine barrel with their bare feet.
