Let's face it, often the three most important parts of the day are breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And that's why here at SanDiegoMagazine.com, we're beefing up our food and restaurant coverage by shining the spotlight on tasty meals under $10. Foie gras and Kobe beef still have a place at our table, but these meals are so reasonably priced, you can eat them every day.
Who goes to the best burger joint in San Diego (three years running) and orders a salad? This girl. And I have no hesitations or shame about it. Yes, the Lounge does throw down a spectacular grass-fed cheeseburger and fries, but I have more love for the mixed vegetable salad, made with 8 different veggies and crumbly ricotta on top. Buttermilk Ranch dressing is an option, but I always opt for the fresher, lighter, lemon-basil vinaigrette, which doesn't weigh down the veggies and trims off a significant amount of calories.
Straight up, the crunchy nest of of romanie, baby spinach, tomato, arugula, cucumber, corn, red onion, and jicama is the best kind of rabbit food (multi-textured and flavorful), but adding a grilled chicken breast for an extra $3 gives the salad a warm, protein-rich component that makes it more filling and satisfying. You can also add a crispy chicken breast, or a salmon, turkey, beef, or veggie patty on top.
On my first couple of visits, I ordered the full size salad, thinking the half was more of a side portion, then frantically tried to finish it as quickly as possible, while everyone else, who had devoured their burgers in about 5 bites, looked on. For lunch, the half-salad is the way to go. The full-size is better for dinner, or to share.
