There's finally somewhere good to eat in Horton Plaza. Landini's Pizzeria is now open in the spot formerly occupied by O'Brothers, on Level 1, above the Levi's store. Like their first location in Little Italy, the pizza case is kept fully stocked with slices like buffalo chicken, veggie, and Sicilian squares. Six bucks buys you two slices and a drink. I normally head straight for the Dante, a white pie with ricotta, mozzarella, and Romano cheese, but this time it was not to be. Fortunately, I found something even better: the meatball marinara.
The thin, freshly tossed crust is topped with mozzarella cheese, ricotta, thin slices of meatball, and a dollop of marinara sauce. Most bites are meatball and ricotta, but when you hit the marinara, it's like stealing a bite of someone else's pizza, because for a moment, it transforms from a white pie to a sauce-soaked tomato pie. The veggie slice, with spinach, mushrooms, tomato olives, and bell peppers is also delicious, but you might want to fold it in half to prevent any ingredient slippage.
Landini's is also debuting a a new pizza called The Christina. It's topped with arugula, marscapone, and proscuitto, and will only be available during the summer.
One major advantage of visiting the Horton Plaza location over the Little Italy or Tijuana outposts is the seating area, which is comfortable, air-conditioned, has a great view into the kitchen, where you can watch pie makers expertly toss big rounds of dough while you eat.
