Milkshakes are a timeless drink. Not only have they been around since the 1800s, but they are one of those drinks that manage to stay equally enjoyable from childhood to adulthood.
This year, Smashburger has taken over San Diego, having already opened five locations, with more to follow. Smashburger has also raised the standard on burger shop milkshakes by offering hand-made Häagen-Dazs Shakes ($3.99) in the classic flavors (vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry) plus more exciting options like Oreo, Nutter Butter, Butterfinger -- or better yet, try the peanut butter and jelly flavor from the "secret menu". Owing to the premium quality ice cream, all of the shakes are rich and thick. The portions are also big enough for sharing.
Normally I only order milkshakes as an afterthought (if they happen to be available), but the shakes here are good enough to earn their own specific trip... but be warned: with just one sip, you may be ruined for all other ice cream shakes.
Smashburger has locations in La Jolla, Del Mar, Mission Valley, Downtown, and Rancho Peñasquitos. The new location in Kearny Mesa opens today.
