Behind the Scenes: October Dining Section

Quick, name three places to get a great pie of pie in San Diego!

Stumped for options that aren't in Julian? So was I, until I discovered Banker's Hill Bar & Restaurant, where pastry chef Rachel Going creates rustic pies using seasonal ingredients. During a photo shoot for the front page of the dining section in the October issue, we got a special preview of what she's got in store for Fall: a lattice-topped apple pie served with vanilla ice cream.

The pie is made with two different types of apples (Granny Smith and Fuji) and is packed with a cornucopia of spices. I've always thought of pie as a second-class dessert, but this one changed my mind. Also delicious is Rachel's famous butterscotch pudding, which will soon be featured on Food Network.
