Double India Pale Ale (8.5% ABV)
If there’s one type of beer whose roots trace back to our region, it’s the double IPA. OK, so technically, most credit Russian River Brewing Company brewmaster Vinnie Cilurzo for coming up with this ultra-hopped suds style when he headed Temecula’s Blind Pig Brewing Company (yes, he’s the Cilurzo behind Temecula’s now defunct Cilurzo Winery), but San Diego brewers took the hops and ran with them, setting a standard and earning a reputation for bringing it with big time bitterness. This double IPA incorporates a quartet of hops and comes across as brawnier and more citric—grapefruit dominance with a tangerine tinge—than the majority of our county’s hop behemoths.
Available at: Part of Coronado Brewing Company’s Crown Series, Idiot IPA is available in six-packs and 22-ounce bombers at local liquor stores and bottle shops, but like most double IPAs, this one is best enjoyed fresh from the keg amongst fellow IPA enthusiasts. Spots like Hamilton’s Tavern and O’Brien’s Pub regularly feature it, as does, not surprisingly, CBC’s brewery-restaurant on Orange Avenue.
