Join UC San Diego’s campus community in the 2021 Martin Luther King Jr. Week of Service. The university will honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy with a weeklong series of virtual events focusing on service, dialogue and training from January 18 to 23, 2021.
In alignment with the campus’s commitment to practice social distancing and protect the community, Martin Luther King Jr. Week of Service offers creative, virtual opportunities for community engagement. Each free event will focus on how to stay meaningfully connected at a local level while remaining virtual.
Admission is free to attend the upcoming sessions:
· Community Building Circle
Monday, January 18 from 5 to 7 p.m.
The community is invited to join fellow student Dialogue Ambassadors in a community-building circle that explores Martin Luther King Jr.'s philosophies on racial justice, healing and hope.
· Tritons Tutor Open House
Tuesday, January 19 from 5 to 6 p.m.
Students from Triton Tutor will have an open house to talk more about the program, how it serves students in San Diego County and offer training on how to get involved in the program.
· Interactive Dialogue: Changemaking in the Past, Present, and Future
Wednesday, January 20 from 5 to 6 p.m.
Join this interactive intergenerational dialogue featuring seniors from the San Diego community. This workshop will be an opportunity to share the unique perspectives that every member of the conversation has to offer by incorporating different viewpoints and stories across generations. The conversation will be focused on altruism and community service.
· Black-Owned Business Panel
Thursday, January 21 from 5 to 6 p.m.
Local San Diego business owners Maya Madsen from Maya's Cookies, Michael Cox from Black SD Magazine, Todd Anderson from Spoiled Vegans Cafe, and Toran Grays from Extraordinary Banana Pudding will form a panel on Black veganism, social entrepreneurship and supporting Black-owned businesses.
· San Diego LGBTQIA+ Community Organization Panel
Friday, January 22 from noon to 1 p.m.
UC San Diego's LGBTQIA+ Resource Center will partner with a local community organization to explore community engagement during COVID-19, how the organization is supporting BIPOC and how to get involved in SD Pride 2021 programs and initiatives.
· Triton Translators Orientation
Saturday, January 23 from noon to 1 p.m.
Triton Translators is an organization that provides no-cost translation services to community partners in San Diego. Students who identify as bilingual or multilingual are invited to an orientation session at noon to learn more about the program and how to join.
