Sophie’s Kensington Gallery Presents Living in the Stream of Living Things
Sep 1, 2018 to Sep 29, 2018
09:00 AM until 04:00 PM
St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC) will present Living in the Stream of Living Things, showcasing the abstracted landscape paintings of local artist, Philip Petrie, along with images of Mary Magdalene. The show will run at Sophie’s Kensington Gallery (4186 Adams Avenue) from September 1 – September 29, with a public reception on September 1 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
The title, Living in the Stream of Living Things, for this exhibition is inspired by an interview with Iggy Pop—the artist stated, “It implies that life has a kind of profligacy in creation that precedes and perhaps overwhelms our attempts to make sense of it.” Petrie’s collage-based approach relates diverse elements to contribute to a storytelling narrative.
Sophie’s Gallery also features a collection of mosaic plaques by Tonya Mitchell, who worked for two years to complete them in the SMSC’s mosaic department. Mitchell works in an abstract style with glass and ceramic tiles—each piece includes a central geometric form that easily relates to Philip Petrie’s work.
Petrie earned an MFA in painting from Ohio State University and has been painting for more than 30 years. A prolific artist, he has exhibited his works in numerous shows including in New York, Chicago and throughout San Diego County.
St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center serves more than 400 adults with developmental disabilities through nationally recognized, innovative programs. Its mission is to educate and empower individuals with developmental disabilities to realize their full potential. Developmental disabilities include autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other cognitive disorders for which there are no cures.
Sophie’s Gallery is an art gallery that illustrates the work of many talented individuals of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center. Inside the gallery is a collection of artworks made by SMSC’s students and has a variety of creative works from jewelry, paintings, cards, etc. The gallery, which is also a gift shop, allows SMSC students to showcase their work, while also raising funds for many of the programs at SMSC.
