The Must-See NASA-Inspired Exhibit in Barrio Logan

The making of Melissa Walter's Of All Things exhibit at Ice Gallery

Melissa Walter’s abstract exhibit Of All Things, at Ice Gallery inside Bread & Salt through September 29, was inspired by her job as a science illustrator at NASA. It’s also a response to the gallery owner's encouragement to broaden her horizons by creating a large scale, site-specific work.

The installation uses thousands of handmade paper pyramids to translate the intangible idea of space into ordinary materials, in a way that’s meant to spur contemplation of their relation to the “limitless omniverse”—that is, every universe that exists.

“It’s my most ambitious work,” she says, noting that it challenged her to work with geometry in new ways. “I knew what I would create would be pretty impactful as a result of working in that space.” Or as we see it, something pretty out of this world.
