Very Important Taco: Tofu Taco

Try the tofu, potato, and mushroom taco at Pokez

By Archana Ram

The eclectically designed East Village eatery is outfitted in a hodgepodge of decor—religious iconography (crosses, Madonnas, Hindu om symbols), a painting of late rapper Tupac Shakur, and an altar to David Bowie, among other details. It makes for a visual feast before you settle in for the main course.

The sit-down Mexican spot serves burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, and south-of-the-border breakfasts, but their tofu, potato, and mushroom taco is the star. Pokez takes three seemingly bland ingredients and jazzes them up in a secret seasoning blend, which is stuffed in a corn tortilla along with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, cheese, and lettuce (we say skip the lettuce to allow the main ingredients to really sing).

If you’re hungry for more than a taco, try the burrito version, which can be topped with melted cheese and their special ranchero sauce free of charge.
