Cabo for Grown-ups

If your last trip to Cabo San Lucas involved drinking a yard at El Squid Roe, it’s time to consider a return trip—and here’s how to do it differently.

Published:

1. Bring the whole family.

Vacationing with the small fry is hassle-free at a modern hotel like Sirena Del Mar, where each unit is outfitted with a kitchen, washer/dryer, and extra fold-out bed, not to mention a balcony with either a hammock or Jacuzzi. Situated above a private stretch of coastline about 10 minutes from downtown Cabo, the property added an all-new building this summer, and by the end of the year will debut a new restaurant with recent hire chef Abraham Tamec, who is already churning out elevated cuisine and a wine list from Guadalupe Valley. Sirena has a game room for kids and fitness center, plus a lot of built-in programming like Friday night fiesta buffets and happy hour specials, activities like water aerobics, and all-you-can-eat poolside BBQs during the day. And if you still want to get wasted spring break-style, order the signature Welk-arita, a gigante-sized marg with a beer poured in and a rubber ducky floating on top. Party like a rock mom. Rooms start at $170, welkresorts.com

Ride a camel in Cabo

2. Ride a camel.

You don’t have to fly all the way to Dubai to ride a humpbacked mammal. Cabo Adventures offers an Outback & Camel Safari at the secluded Rancho San Cristobal. The camel rides last about 20 minutes, but the package includes a short nature walk in which you’ll see a 300-year-old Cardon cactus, a tree that bleeds red, and vegetation that leaks a natural SPF. A Unimog takes you to the camels and then to a delicious traditional Mexican lunch (tortillas made on the spot!) and tequila tasting. This is a side of Cabo you’ve never seen. $109 for adults, cabo-adventures.com

Cabo San Lucas

3. Attend a fine tequila tasting.

Newsflash: It’s possible to drink tequila and not make the “tequila face” (hold your breath, sip, swallow, and breathe out through your nose). Tequila tastings have become somewhat ubiquitous in Mexico—but a good one to try is at Habanero’s Gastro Grill and Tequila Bar in San José del Cabo, where the owner is tequila-tasting certified. Need a break from the mescal? Craft beer lovers like Ramuri Brewery, a brewpub serving fresh ceviche in place of typical bar food. Taqueria Los Claros (Boulevard Antonio Mijares) is a favorite for fish tacos and The Office on the Beach offers a long list of seafood dishes, served right on a beach where the sand is finer than most.
