In golf, looks matter. Think about Torrey Pines’ stunning seaside cliffs, or the rocky, shipwrecking water hazard on Cypress Point’s 16th hole. After all, the sport is essentially a walk in a park turned into a game. Playing 18 holes in a dirt lot wouldn’t have quite the thrill.

At Ramona’s San Vicente Golf Resort, the vibe is pure wilderness. An early participant in the county’s Turf Replacement Program, the resort replaced 18.5 acres of greens with drought-tolerant natural vegetation on a drip irrigation system. The landscape was designed to maintain the native ecosystem.

Be prepared to play every shot in your bag—and some you didn’t know you had. The variety on this course holds your interest, with each hole showing off a distinct personality. The sixth hole is a beautiful uphill play, but also deadly with a dogleg. The 12th hole is a tranquil par-3 with a tee shot over a beautiful water feature that—if you’re not careful—will lull you into a level of relaxation most of us are not used to.

To make it a full getaway, book one of the newly remodeled rooms at The Lodge at San Vicente Resort, each of which includes a large patio or balcony with panoramic views of the course and Ramona’s rolling hills. The Stay & Play guest package combines one round of golf for two players with a cart, as well as time to experience the resort’s other amenities, like the Riviera Wellness Spa.

And don’t miss The Oaks Grille. The menu spans standard clubhouse comfort food like chicken tenders and burgers to more elegant options, like Korean salmon with barbecue glaze and Thai slaw. For something more casual, the Par Lounge is a perfect place to enjoy food, drinks, live entertainment, and watch sporting events on five HDTVs. Or just relax on the patio and take in the view of the golf course.

Just 45 minutes northeast of San Diego amid wineries and the wild animals of the Safari Park, San Vicente makes the middle of nowhere seem pretty great.
