Now Open: The Flying Pig

“Go to Vista!” said few San Diegans ever. Vista has mostly been known as an affordable place to live that’s reasonably close to the ocean. Low rent inspired craft brewers to set up here. The restaurant scene, though, was largely chain hell. But now South Santa Fe Avenue, in the city’s redeveloping zone, is undergoing a mini-renaissance, and The Flying Pig is one of its major new attractions. The bistro—which wowed Oceanside with its high-minded food in casual, funk-minded environs—opened this 3,562-square-foot offshoot in an old bank. Sit on the wrap-around patio or by the old tractor (donated by a regular), try the braised pork belly or house-made pastas, and pair ’em with something from Vista’s Mother Earth Brew Co. Feel a nook of the city come alive.
