Hank Bauer played for the San Diego Chargers from 1977 to 1983, during which time he noticed that golf seemed to be popular with players on their days off. When asked to join a teammate for a round, Hank jumped at the chance even though he had never picked up a club. He was immediately drawn to the game because of the incredible challenge, the social aspect, and the fact that (unlike football) anyone, at any age, can play the game and be competitive. Now Hank can be found most afternoons at Sycuan Golf Resort, where he has been a member for years.

The beauty of the Sycuan Golf Resort is in its variety. There are three unique golf courses.

Pine Glen is an 18-hole par 3 course. It’s the perfect way to introduce a beginner to the game but can also be quite challenging for even the best golfers. It’s perfect for working on your short game!

Oak Glen is subtly tough and requires you to put a great deal of thought into each shot. The subtle breaks and nuances of the greens make it imperative to pay attention to every single putt.

Willow Glen is the longest of the courses, and with its elevation changes, narrow fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and several dogleg holes, you are required to hit every kind of golf shot.

Looking to improve your game? The golf instructors at Sycuan Golf Resort are among the best in San Diego. Bob Madsen is the Director of Instruction, and he is epic. You can find the specific instruction that meets your needs, whether it’s an occasional lesson or multi-day golf school. And let’s not forget the School of Golf Exclusively for Women, led by Julie Day and Kim Estep. Women can learn in an environment with other women, which takes the intimidation factor down a notch. The teaching staff consists of all PGA- or LPGA-trained professionals, an important factor when searching for any instructor.

For those who want to try their hand at disc golf, the Olive Glen Golf Course is ideal for beginners. It is set in an established olive grove with a very relaxed and laid-back vibe. For those who are more competitive, this course has a variety of tee options, which allow for 27 unique holes.
