11 Best San Diego Neighborhoods for Renters

These locations offer low rents or high vacancy rates

Not yet ready to buy, but struggling to cope with the sky-high rents in San Diego? You’re not alone. Last year, rent in the county hit an all-time high, an increase of 7 percent since 2016. But before you start packing, take a look at 11 of the best neighborhoods for renters. Within the city, check out Logan Heights, Mount Hope, San Ysidro, and City Heights. As of last fall, these four neighborhoods weighed in from $1,050 to $1,321 for two-bedroom apartments. Logan Heights had the lowest average rent among the four.

But what those neighborhoods offer in affordability, they lack in availability. If you’re looking for an apartment, try College Area, which last fall had the city’s highest vacancy rate at 8.1 percent, or East Village and Cortez Hill, whose vacancy rates were both around 8 percent.

Elsewhere in the county, Bonsall, Fallbrook, and Ramona had the lowest rents, ranging from $1,150 to $1,293 for two-bedroom apartments, while Del Mar had the highest vacancy rate outside the city of San Diego, at 5.7 percent in September 2017.

Think of this as a way to alleviate your rent-up aggression.
