Letter from the Editor: Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Editor in Chief Erin Meanley Glenny dishes on the June issue of San Diego Magazine
With the Friar and friend Kim Cunningham

By Erin Meanley Glenny

I was in elementary school the first time I attended a Padres game. My best friend Sara and her family invited me. At the time, I didn’t know Bip Roberts from Randy Ready, but I have never forgotten the moment I first stepped into the grandstands of Jack Murphy Stadium. Those massive lights crowning the top, the tidy green grass, the acoustics of thousands of bodies and their activity. Not to out myself as a North County bumpkin, but I had never seen that many people gathered in a single place at once. It wasn’t like viewing a milling crowd at the Del Mar Fair or the beach, or even a seated audience at Spreckels or the Civic. And the thrill of that first home run, whoever hit it. I felt very important witnessing it. That crack! I think people can forget the simple magic of Major League Baseball, and the team that has been our very own since 1969. That’s why it was so fun diving into “The Padres Turn 50.” Writer Ron Donoho tracked down superfans, talked to the front office about bringing back the brown, and even managed to catch the San Diego Chicken (he came to us for the shoot, but he never lets anyone photograph him without his bird head on).

This issue is also packed with a lineup of superstars in the restaurant world. Our annual “Best Restaurants” features San Diego’s up-and-coming chefs, innovative dishes, and bucket-list places to sit down and enjoy a meal—even at Petco Park. This year we debuted several new categories, such as best dumplings, chilaquiles, matcha, mac ’n’ cheese, and restaurant merch. Nearly 7,500 readers voted—thank you for recognizing the local establishments that work so hard to please our palates. We also publish our food critic Troy Johnson’s picks, along with his always-brilliant and unique takes on the restaurant industry and the dining experience.

Whether you’re a foodie or a baseball fan or both (or neither—there’s lots more ahead), we’ll help you make the summer of 2019 one you can hang a star on.

Fever Pitch

While digging around, I found my program from the 1992 All-Star Game. Our family only had two tickets and my older sister had a fever, so I got to go. Typical Meanley, we were late. My dad and I had to park over a mile away and run along Friars Road. We were still a quarter-mile to the stadium when we heard Wilson Philips sing the national anthem. I got heat stroke and spent at least one inning in the bathroom.
