Salt Collection Brings a Quintessential SoCal Vibe to Encinitas

Pro surfer Rob Machado and wife Sophie debut a new coastal lifestyle boutique

Supersoft tees, layered necklaces, cozy throws, bikinis, and potted plants galore… these are a few of Sophie Machado’s favorite things. Her new Encinitas shop, Salt Collection, is part home decor, part apparel (men’s, women’s, and kids’).

As the wife of pro surfer Rob Machado, Sophie was inspired by their travels, particularly to exotic locales like Bali, where she’s unearthed unique treasures and gotten to know some of the local artisans. When this charming cottage on the 101 became available, she decided to open her own store.

Salt’s aesthetic is soft and pretty, with a mix of global goods, niche labels, and mainstream brands. One side looks like a living room, the other a closet. It’s the kind of place where you’d want to sit and stay awhile. And that’s the intent. Sophie designed a deck out back, complete with a hammock and hanging ferns.

The checkout counter is inside a small kitchen with original 1930s green tile, where the employees also serve coffee and tea. There are even a few surfboards shaped by Rob hanging on the walls and ceiling. It’s basically everything you need to lead the quintessential SoCal lifestyle—Beach Living 101, on the 101.
