Hipcooks is a hip and hands-on cooking school that originated in L.A., then spread to Seattle and Portland, with the newest location in North Park. Equally entertaining and informative, its culinary classes combine firm techniques, such as knife skills, with a free-spirited cooking philosophy, where measuring is discouraged and copious tasting is encouraged. And yes, you get to eat what you make. Each class ends in a dinner party seated at a long communal table, and often includes wine, beer, or cocktail pairings. Hipcooks locally sources as many of its class ingredients as possible, from places like North Park Farmers Market and Catalina Offshore Products. Classes range in theme from “OMG, Cooking for a Crowd” to “Thai One On” and “Hot Soup Focus Group.” The school also participates in the neighborhood’s monthly “30th on 30th” event. 4048 30th Street, North Park
