Dina Weim

72, Santee, Retired

Where are you going today?

My husband has dementia and Alzheimer’s, so I’m meeting with an attorney to become his conservator.

How do you feel about that?

It’s a new way of life. My dad suffered from the same thing, but he’d sleep most of the day. If you were to talk to my husband, he’s witty, sarcastic. But there’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes.

You’re staying busy.

I also have five grandkids.

Do you find time for yourself?

I had plans to travel. But tell God you have a plan and watch him laugh. I’m still knocking things off my bucket list. I had the opportunity to go to Machu Picchu this September.

How was it?

It’s everything they say it is.

What’s your New Year’s resolution?

I make six-month intentions. You hear about taking care of yourself first—my goal is that, and to go to a Palm Springs retreat.

Cool shoes.

They are brand-new Nike Jordans. I can kick really far with them.

Will they help you with skateboarding?

Maybe. I’m trying to do an ollie. It’s where you jump in the air and hold on to the skateboard without your hands. I don’t get scared because I know I won’t fall.

What’s your New Year’s resolution?

(A resolution is like, “I’m going to eat more broccoli.”) No! I want to be better in school.

That’s so great. Better at what?

I’m going to behave better.

What are you good at in school?

I’m good at spelling. This week’s spelling test has an eight-letter word on it.

What’s the word?

“Resource.”
