San Diego Magazine Staff Go-to Recipes

We all love to juice. Here are four make-it-at-home drinks.

Kimberly Cunningham, Senior Editor:

“It will be greenish brown... but you can’t taste the spinach at all!”

1 scoop chocolate Designer Whey protein powder
1 tbsp peanut butter
3/4 cup almond milk
1/2 frozen banana
5 ice cubes
3 handfuls spinach

Machine: VITAMIX 5200
Frequency: About once a week. I would like to do it more, but I am always running late for work!

David Martin, Digital Media Director:

“It’s tasty, healthy, and gives me energy. I have this every morning minus Sunday because… well… bacon.”

2 cups sweetened or unsweetened almond milk
1/4 cup plain kefir
1/2 tbsp lemon juice
1/2 tbsp lime juice
1/2 tbsp maca powder
5 baby carrots
1 kiwi
Handful of blueberries
Handful of frozen kale (or 1 regular-sized fresh leaf)
1 scoop of protein powder

Machine: Regular ol’ blender
Frequency: Six days a week

Erin Meanley Glenny, Executive Editor:

“I use whatever I have and gamble with the taste. Today’s happened to be good.”

1 Handful of kale
2 green apples
3 squirts of lemon
1 thumb-size ginger
5 chunks of pineapple
1 tbsp of chia powder (optional)
water (about 2 inches deep)

Machine: Vitamix 750
Frequency: Five days a week

Krissy Engle, Account Manager:

“I love starting my day with a ton of greens! Plus, this drink is just sweet enough that I can bypass the office donuts!”

1 handful of spinach or kale
1 cup frozen mango or pineapple
1 banana (fresh or frozen)
1 ripe pear
1 small piece of ginger, peeled
Water for desired consistency
A few ice cubes (optional)
Chia seeds (optional)
Add greens to blender first, then add fruit. Add a little bit of water and if it’s not blending well, add more. Once blended, stir in chia seeds and enjoy!

Machine: VITAMIX 5200
Frequency: Five days a week
