Businesses were not the only awards recipients at the 2014 Torch Awards luncheon. Five high school students who wrote essays on the importance of ethics and integrity in our community were presented with cash scholarships. A total of 304 essays from students attending 73 different high schools in San Diego County were evaluated by judges.

This year’s recipients were: Monica Cooper, a senior from Mater Dei Catholic High School ($1,250); Anton Cujec, a senior from High Tech High Media Arts ($1,000); Stephen Clark, a senior from La Jolla Country Day School ($750); Matt Mullen, a senior from Torrey Pines High School ($500); and Tristan Curnow, a senior from Fallbrook High School ($1,500). In his essay, Tristan Curnow uses his fledgling lawn-cutting businesses to explain why he believes hard work and integrity are imperative in a personal and professional sense.
