La Jolla’s The Hake Has a New, Fancy View

Come for the ocean views, stay for the cocktails

A Prospect Street restaurant without an ocean view is like a camping tent with a big-screen TV. The main attraction’s all wrong. So The Hake hired Mexico City architect Jorge Campos to redesign their 2,000-square-foot Latin bistro. Now it’s 5,400 square feet, with all windows overlooking La Jolla Cove below.

Executive chef Aarti Sanghavi (ex-Puesto, Searsucker) is doing intercontinental tapas, like lobster aguachile with chile-pear granita and opah chorizo with a 63-degree egg. They’ve also got an oyster bar. The cocktail program has been revamped with options like the Naime; with Tequila Cabeza, Aperol, Grand Marnier, Cynar, sweet vermouth, and Fernet-Branca; plus more than 250 wines you can take home.
