Balboa Park Tower Opens to the Public

Published:

On January 1, 2015, Balboa Park’s California Tower will open to the public for the first time in 80 years. A $3 million fundraising campaign is underway to refurb the iconic tower, part of the California Building that houses the San Diego Museum of Man. Built for the 1915 Panama–California Exposition, the intricately designed structure cost the State just $250,000. This month, all donations are welcome, but those with a cool $5,000 to spare can name a step. Once it’s reopened, visitors will be allowed up to the eighth floor (see circular balcony above). That’s a height of about 357 feet above sea level, offering views of the ocean, Mexico, and the Cuyamaca mountains. We see a lot of Tower Instagrams in our future.
