Orange Is the New Workout

Published:

A fast-growing, international fitness craze is hitting San Diego in a big way, with studios open in Point Loma and La Jolla, and an Encinitas location coming soon. Orange Theory’s plateau-busting workout is 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of strength training, divided into treadmill intervals, rowing, and weights.

Using heart-rate monitoring on flat screens, each participant’s name and heart rate is displayed in a grid, and when they’re working at 84 to 91 percent of their maximum heart rate, the light surrounding their name turns orange. The theory is that being in the orange zone for 12 to 20 minutes of the hour-long workout maximizes calorie burn during and after class. Orange you glad the first class is free?
