On a Mission

With the North Park bandwagon full, Little Italy too hot, and Hillcrest too expensive, there’s a minor restaurant renaissance happening in Mission Hills. The Patio on Goldfinch is the most ambitious arrival. After striking gold with The Patio on Lamont in Pacific Beach, owner Gina Champion-Cain is going for at least LEED gold certification with the new space. A third of the restaurant is open-air with two massive plant walls. There is a fancy cheese cave. Chef John Medall’s seafood-centric menu has octopus, oysters, mussels, sardines, abalone—if it’s wet, it’s there. The team isn’t done yet—they plan to open a retail concept around the corner, then new spots in Liberty Station and North County.
