Seconds and Thirds
The latest jobs report showed super slow growth nationally, but the restaurant and nightlife industry in San Diego is plain booming. A sampling of local diners that have recently announced expansions and second or third locations:
The team behind ever-crowded Blind Lady Ale House will soon open a new brewpub on El Cajon Boulevard in the former SoHo space called Tiger, Tiger. No pizzas, but plenty of craft beer and other munchies. Here’s hoping it will alleviate the line to get in to BLAH on Friday nights (yes, add “hand-stamping bouncer” to the list of things we never thought we’d see at a local pizza and beer spot on Adams Avenue).
PrepKitchen’s original formula of fancy takeout versions of Whisknladle’s menu hit so big so quickly that young owner Arturo quickly expanded the menu to include plenty of original items, then added a new chef and a second location in Del Mar. And just recently, he announced plans to open yet a third location of the popular neighborhood spot in Little Italy later this year.
Building on the success of several other neighborhood beer bars (Hamilton’s, Small Bar and Eleven), Scot Blair and crew are adding to the empire with a new brewpub downtown on the fringe of the East Village called Monkey Paw. Expect taps to be flowing later this fall.
