A longtime South Bay favorite, Karina’s Mexican Seafood is now colonizing downtown, in the former Chaplos space at Tenth and B. Sinaloans Arnulfo Contreras and his wife, Maria Ines Curiel (the place is named for their eldest daughter, Karina) have been serving up Mexican specialties for more than three decades. Among the many seafood offerings are shrimp “cucarachas,” deep-fried in the shell and eaten whole. The 4,500-square-foot restaurant’s design has also received a refresher, with modern rustic elements and colorful accents, custom wall coverings, and specially commissioned Mexican-inspired murals and sculpture.
