SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT: The 98th anniversary Charity Ball, “Sensational Smiles: Every Child Deserves a Healthy Smile,” at the Hotel del Coronado raised a record-breaking $400,000 for the Rady Children’s Hospital Pediatric Dental Residency Program. The grand dame of San Diego social events was attended by 650 and chaired by Kimberly Hill-Miller. Nancie Geller cochaired; Susan Houser and Debi Kelly chaired the pre-ball reception.

 

IT TAKES HEART: Zandra Rhodes and Salah Hassanein chaired the 10th annual Heart of San Diego gala to benefit the University of California, San Diego’s Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center. Peter Farrell was honored at the event, held at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, for his entrepreneurship and passion for advancing healthcare.

 

ALL ABOARD: The Chron’s & Colitis Foundation of America hosted the Heroes with Heart awards dinner aboard the historic Navy ship U.S.S. Midway. Emceed by Fox6 anchor Brian Christie, the event honored Kim Barrett, Michael Docherty, Eric Hayes and Ernest Melivin “Mel” Moore. Lisa Gary was chair; Rolf Benirschke was on the honorary committee.

 

BEHIND THE LENS: The San Diego Museum of Art hosted a private cocktail reception to celebrate its exhibit “Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer’s Life, 1990-2005.” The iconic shutterbug, whose work is regularly featured in Vogue and Vanity Fair, made a special appearance to mingle with patrons and fans.

 

IRISH EYES ARE SMILING: The American Ireland Fund, dedicated to supporting programs of peace and reconciliation, arts and culture, education and community development in Ireland, presented a gala and auction at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Senator George Mitchell was honored with the Heritage Award; William Lynch received the Robert A. McNamara Literary & Arts Award. Chuck Lemoine and John Clark chaired; J. Terrence O’Malley was honorary chairman.

 

EAGLE COUNTRY: Joe Walsh of the legendary classic rock band The Eagles performed a benefit concert for The Grauer School at the Belly Up in Solana Beach. Walsh fans, including school founder Stuart Grauer, Sheila and Steven Wirick, Maureen Ecke, David Meyer and Lizbeth Ecke, packed the North County venue.

 

SO GUCCI: Stacy and Paul Jacobs hosted a private cocktail party to celebrate the opening of the Gucci store at Fashion Valley and to the benefit of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Patrons sipped champagne amid shelves of Gucci handbags and svelte models draped in the Italian label’s spring line.

 

HOME RUN: The 11th annual Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Tribute & Scholarship Dinner at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina raised funds for college scholarships and included a tailgate reception and auction. Debe Berger was chair; Randy Jones was vice chair. Robert Countryman chaired the scholarship committee.

 

ON A MISSION: The Boys & Girls Club of Vista presented the Diamond Ball and Have a Heart 4 Kids Awards at the Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. In addition to a gourmet wine dinner and auction, an awards ceremony honored locals who “have done outstanding work to improve the lives of children in the community.” Local author and veteran TV journalist John Culea shared emcee duties with Channel 8 anchor Kathleen Bade.

 

DIAMOND LIFE: The Museum of San Diego History and San Diego Historical Society hosted Richard Kurin, director of the Smithsonian Institution, at a lecture and reception to benefit the San Diego Historical Society Costume Council. Kurin signed copies of his book, The Hope Diamond: The Legendary History of a Cursed Gem, at the blue diamond–theme affair.

 

THE OTHER WHITE HOUSE: Marcina and Neil Checketts, owners of Casa Blanca Salon & Spa in Rancho Santa Fe, hosted a party to celebrate the launch of their Web site (casablancasalonspa.com) and raise funds for Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation’s PC Pals program at Rady Children’s Hospital. The event featured a fashion show, a celebrity chef cook-off pitting Bernard Guillas against Jeffrey Strauss, a champagne station and an oxygen bar.

 

PAINT IT GREEN: Encinitas-based Lux Art Institute hosted a donor reception at the Del Sur Ranch house. Featured guest Robert Noble, founder of the San Diego chapter of the National Green Building Council, spoke about green architecture and sustainable building practices at the Southwestern-theme gathering.
