New Beer and BBQ for Julian
Vince Marsaglia, owner of Port Brewing Company and co-founder of The Lost Abbey and Tom Nickel, proprietor of O’Brien’s Pub, have collaborated before, mostly on their annual beer festivals, the San Diego Real Ale and the San Diego Strong Ale, held at Pizza Port Carlsbad but this week marks the debut of their biggest partnership to date, a new restaurant, bar and soon-to-be brewery in Julian, the first brewery in the area since the 1880’s.
Marsaglia and Nickel, along with Vince’s sister and co-owner Gina and Tom’s wife Lindsey, have taken over The Bailey BBQ, a 30-year-old fixture that anchors one end of Julian’s Main Street.
An accomplished chef and barbecue master (you’ve undoubtedly seen his massive Traeger grill at beer events around town), Marsaglia is taking charge of the kitchen, where he’ll use the existing deep pit barbecue and stash of oak wood to cook up a menu of BBQ favorites, from pulled pork and chicken to tri-tip. He’s also spent the last few weeks building out the wooden bar in the adjacent live music/seating area, out of staves from Bourbon barrels that used to house The Lost Abbey’s Angel’s Share.
Nickel, who has a home in the area, will eventually oversee the day-to-day operations at the restaurant and also serve as Bailey’s brewer. It’ll be his first foray back into production brewing since leaving his head brewer position at Oggi’s Pizza and Brewery in October 2005 to run his popular Kearny Mesa pub full-time.
The plan for Bailey’s BBQ is to first install a home brew-size system - four to six kegs at a time - in an empty room next door at the Bailey House, a historic 1860‘s property that’s said to be the first house in Julian. If all goes well, the partners plan to build a larger, dedicated brewery on the property, where they also hope to plant a small farm.
There’s seating, indoors and out, for 150 people and two 16-tap towers and they’re open now, with a limited beer and food menu for the Labor Day weekend (perfect timing for the Grape Stomp Festa), with the intention to be fully up and running by September 10.
