Baby Kale Caesar @ Comun

Remember what I said about kale? Well forget all that. You didn’t seriously think I was going to break up with a basic cornerstone salad green. At Comun, chef Chad White’s baby kale Caesar salad is fantastic mostly because of the dressing and the morita ash crumbs, plus a little pecorino.

New restaurants tend to get the headlines, while certain chefs and rooms have been cranking out hundreds of near-perfect meals every week. The Marine Room, with chefs Bernard Guillas and Ron Oliver, are just that. Constant quality. At a recent meal they proved it with a Maine diver scallop with bamboo rice, persimmon, mint sprouts and an incredible ccoconut kaffir foam. Kaffir is one of the most phenomenal flavoring agents on the planet, and the globe-trotters here know how to use it.

A Burger @ Hodad’s

It’s gigantic. It’s got half an onion on it. Is that half a head of iceberg lettuce? A tomato the size of your face. And some good old greasy patties. This week, San Diego says goodbye to an icon—as owner Mike “Bossman” Hardin has died. The Hodad’s family has been hit hard, losing young employee and friend Kyle Witkowski earlier in the month. Time to sit with a burger, say a kind word, grieve over food like we’ve done for centuries. R.I.P., Bossman.
