By Troy Johnson

Craft Beer & Bites at Makers Quarter

WHEN: Oct. 19, 3PM

WHERE: SILO (753 15th Street, Downtown)

COST: $20 and $35

TICKETS: www.craftbeerandbites.bpt.me

Makers Quarter is a relatively new designation for east Downtown—the most local, artsy part. It includes Barrio Logan, Sherman Heights, South Park and Golden Hill. Y’know, the less glitzy, more authentic parts. All “Makers Quarter” really means is that a big group of people who seem to really “get” local culture are promoting the hell out of the area and highlighting creative local types. To that end, SILO is their nifty event space at—an open-air hangout for film festivals, food festivals, well-curated mayhem. Craft Beer & Bites is a good reason to check it out—San Diego State University’s College of Extended Studies Business of Craft Beer Program (yes, you can get a degree in chewy beer). Local breweries and food trucks will pair up their creations and revelers will play bocce ball, ping-pong, bean-bag toss and life-size Jenga, plus live mural-making, silk-screening and brewing.

San Diego Beer Week

WHEN: All Week

WHERE: Places

COST: Differs

San Diego is officially the best beer city in the world, as concluded by a scientific method called I Said So. Obviously we’re a big deal in suds, so I’ll leave the tape-measuring of greatness to other media measurers. The city has over 60 craft breweries and another one by the time I finished this sentence. The celebration for that culture (and the dollars it brings to the local economy) is officially SD Beer Week—kicking off Nov. 1 and running through Nov. 10. There are literally hundreds of associated events, the largest being the kickoff party (Nov. 1, 6-9PM, Broadway Pier, 1000 N. Harbor Dr., $75) with 50-plus breweries and SD Brewers Guild Festival (Nov. 2, Broadway Pier, $40 person) which gives each attendee 15 3oz. samples with food, music, etc. But the closing event (details being worked out and put on SDBW.org as we speak) is the one I wouldn’t miss. Twelve of the city’s top chefs will pair with 24 breweries. Two breweries per chef, which will result in two dishes from each that hopefully are magically paired with the suds. It’ll set you back $75, which is a relative steal for the quantity and quality.

Women Winemakers Dinner at Saltbox

WHEN: Oct. 24, 6:30PM

WHERE: Saltbox, 1047 5th Ave., Downtown, 619.515.3003

COST: $60/pp

Emily Wines is a big deal. I mean, given her stature as one of the top female wine minds in the world, that last name looks particularly genius and foreshadowy, no? In 2008, she became a Master Sommelier, one of only 129 in the world. She’s currently wine director of Kimpton Hotels. And with this four-course dinner at Kimpton’s Downtown property, Hotel Palomar, she’ll pair female-made wines with dishes from interim chef Jeremiah Bryant (their hunt for a new exec chef is nearly finalized). A candied walnut-and-pear salad will get a La Crema Monterey Pinot Gris, a risotto goes with Arrowood Sonoma County Chardonnay, a chocolate trio with berries gets Matanzas Creek Sonoma County Merlot. You get the picture. A good meal in a pretty stunning room with one of the world’s foremost wine experts, with some proceeds going to Susan G. Komen.
