'For the Love of a Child'

On Feb. 11 San Diego’s oldest charity event, celebrated more than a century at the Hotel del Coronado. This year’s theme “For the Love of a Child”, proceeds will benefit The Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children’s Hospital. With the addition of the Rady Children’s Institute for Genomic Medicine, the Peckham Center remains at the forefront of bedside diagnosis and treatment of rare pediatric cancers.

NBCUniversal

NBC San Diego, in partnership with the NBCUniversal Foundation, launched the 21st Century Solutions, its fifth annual grant challenge for nonprofits implementing new and innovative programs. The New Children’s Museum was selected as one of three organizations in San Diego and awarded $25,000 for its Innovator LAB, a STEAM-focused makerspace where children create unique and inventive works. The program is a collaboration of local area artists and engineers to create STEAM “design challenges” focused on topics like buoyancy, balance, and electricity.

The National Conflict Resolution Center announced the 2017 honorees to be recognized at the 29th Annual Peacemaker Awards Dinner. The Southern Poverty Law Center is the National Peacemaker Honoree; Bill and Lori Walton are Philanthropy and Peacemaking Honoree; and Rachel’s Challenge is San Diego Peacemaker Honoree. The event which is being held on Apr. 8 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, honors individuals and organizations who have made a contribution to conflict resolution nationally and locally.

Episcopal Community Services is celebrating its 90th anniversary on Feb. 18 at Allen Airways Flying Museum. ECS: Making Miracles for 90 Years, “Water to Wine” is being presented by Barney&Barney, HechtSolberg, Bank of the West, K & C Distributing, Lakeshore Learning Materials and Winfield Development.

Higgs Fletcher & Mack contributed $1,500 to students who received scholarships from the Filipino American Lawyers of San Diego and the Pan Asian Lawyers Club of San Diego. A total of five students received scholarships.

SD Opera Gala

SD Opera 2017 Gala Redefined was held on Jan. 28 at the Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier. Sycuan Casino was the Platinum Sponsor and Carol Lazier and John Rebelo and Sarah B. Marsh Rebelo were Premier Table Sponsors. Other sponsors included Union Bank and Ahern Agribusiness. Net proceeds of $150,000 will support the Opera’s programs and performances, including community-focused initiatives such as Words and Music.

The Fifth annual “5K Paw Walk in the Garden” is being held on Feb. 18 at the San Diego Botanic Garden. The Rancho Coastal Humane Society and the San Diego Botanic Garden have partnered to raise funds that support people, plants, and pets.

The 13th Annual Dream House Raffle benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego announced the 1st Early Bird Drawing. Sponsors include Barney&Barney, Wells Fargo and Signature Flight Support. A 2017 Tesla Model S or $50,000 is one of 1,700 total prizes. The grand prize winner chooses either the San Diego Dream House or $2.1 million in cash.

Grossmont Healthcare

The Grossmont Healthcare District has awarded a $10,000 grant to License to Freedom. The El Cajon-based nonprofit assists Middle Eastern refugees and immigrants with cultural assimilation and health education. The grant will support their community outreach efforts, including providing culturally competent health education classes taught in Arabic to recent refugees and immigrants now living in the East County.
