The CFO Rountable’s non-profit organization, Day for Change awarded $85,000 in grants to 13 local organizations serving the abused, neglected and underserved children of San Diego. The grants were announced at the Annual Open House held on Dec. 16 at the Barney & Barney office. Those receiving grants were Casa de Amparo, Emilio Nares Foundation, My Girlfriend’s Closet, Walden Family Services and Voices for Children. The CFO Roundtable is a forum for San Diego’s leading CFOs and financial executives to share best practices in an effort to drive professional value to organizations throughout the region.

Higgs Fletcher & Mack law firm awarded its fifth $10,000 University of San Diego School of Law Diversity Scholarship to 2016 Juris Doctor candidate, Norma Lujan. She was selected for demonstrating ethical and civic leadership and for providing services to underrepresented groups in the community. “We were also inspired by Norma’s drive and perseverance, which she demonstrated while encountering hurdles during her law school career, said Steven Cologne, partner and co-chair of HFM’s Diversity Committee.

2016 KIWANIS OF SAN DIEGO DRIVE Out Hunger Golf Classic being held Jan. 29 at Maderas Golf Club. Proceeds will benefit the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. Kaiser Permanente is the Presenting Sponsor. Other sponsors include Donovan’s, GUPTA Wealth Management, Land Rover, CT Homes and Wells Fargo.

Papers of the late J. Robert Beyster, founder of Science Applications International Corporation and a business innovator who developed a successful blueprint for entrepreneurial, employee-empowered companies, are being donated to the UC San Diego Library by the Beyster family.

“We are very pleased to be donating my father’s papers to the UC San Diego Library, as we approach the first anniversary of his passing,” said Mary Ann Beyster, Bob Beyster’s daughter and a former trustee of the UC San Diego Foundation Board.

The 2016 TRI-N-HARDER-4-KIDS Indoor Triathlon was held on Jan. 23 at Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center benefitting STAR/PAL youth programs and the SDPOA. The event, presented by Competitor Group and TriRock San Diego, honored the memory of fallen San Diego Police Officer Jeremy Henwood whose last act was one of a kindness to a child who needed a helping hand. This year’s athletes included San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman, DEA San Diego Special Agent in Charge William Sherman and La Mesa Police.

Sarah B. Marsh-Rebelo will be honored at Swing & Bling presented by San Diego Opera. Marsh-Rebelo is being recognized for her commitment and service to saving SDO when it faced bankruptcy and closing.  The event is being held on Jan. 30 at McMillin Event Center at Liberty Station. Catering is sponsored by Sycuan Catering.

Soroptimists Together Against Trafficking (STAT!)  will host an event to salute mission heroes on Jan. 29 at the Good Samaritan Episcopal Church. The 2016 heroes include Susan Johnson, Churches Against Trafficking; Lawyers Club of San Diego; Jenee’ Littrell, former Assistant Principal Grossmont Union High School District; and Bill & Melody Valleroy, Generate Hope supporters. They are recognized for making a difference in the fight against human trafficking and for stepping up to find unique ways to help victims, reduce demand, and raise awareness about modern day slavery.

Just in Time for Foster Youth held its annual My First Home for the Holidays campaign and raised $199,000 in cash, gift cards and in-kind donations. The campaign ran from Oct. 1, 2015 through Jan. 16, 2016. JIT is dedicated to ending the cycle of foster care by helping youth obtain community support as they leave the foster care system.
