Women Marines Association Celebrate 72 Years Of Women

The San Diego County CA2 chapter of the Women Marines Association hosted a celebration of the 72nd anniversary of women being allowed to serve in the United States Marine Corps on Feb. 13. Sergeant Major Angela Maness was the honored guest speaker. She made history as the first female Sergeant Major of 8 & I Barracks in Washington, DC. Although women served in the Marine Corps during World War I, all were separated from service by June 30, 1919. The Marine Corps Women’s Reserve was established on Feb. 13, 1943.
The San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program’s Women’s Resource Fair is being held on Feb. 28 at Golden Hall. The SDVLP has been addressing the needs of homeless and low-income women and children since 1990. Women will meet with social services providers and receive shelter referrals, mental health provider referrals, and substance abuse help. The Women’s Resource Fair Taskforce is accepting monetary donations as well as toiletry items to be included in participants’ gift bags. www.wrfsandiego.org.
Farmers Insurance Open golf tournament
U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Tony Jay Johnson and 19 friends were hosted by AT&T at a day at the Farmers Insurance Open golf tournament. Johnson was the winner of a contest hosted by AT&T and Farmers Insurance Open. “Patriotic selfie’s” were submitted using #ATTSalutes along with why they serve. Johnson was nominated by a friend and won the contest. Johnson and his friends were hosted on Feb. 8 and treated to all-inclusive hospitality valued at $6,000. AT&T executives attended to celebrate with Johnson and thank him for his service.
The 2015 Fostering Hope Golf Classic Cocktail & Auction Party is being held on Mar. 8 at the Grand Del Mar followed by the 23rd annual golf tournament on Mar.9. Sponsors include Qualcomm as the Presenting Sponsor, Cox, MG Properties Group, Tecate Group, and G.A.G. Charitable Foundation. Proceeds will benefit Voices for Children’s Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program.
Mitchell Thorp Foundation
Mitchell Thorp Foundation sponsored a 5K Run/Walk to raise money for families with kids with life threatening diseases. The event was held on Feb. 7 at Poinsettia Park in Carlsbad. Sponsors included NRG, Independent Financial Group, Datron, Avista Technologies, RoadRunner Sports and U.S.Bank. A total of $162,500 was raised.
The San Diego Air & Space Museum is presenting the 45th anniversary of Apollo 13 “Failure Was Never An Option” on Mar. 21. The event will honor America’s legacy space programs – Mercury, Gemini and Apollo; accepting President Kennedy’s challenge to land on the moon in a decade. Presenting Sponsors are Helene and George Gould and Northrop Grumman.
Big Brothers Big Sisters marked National Mentoring Month (January) by announcing the Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year. This year’s “Big of the Year” award went to Big Brother Lee Mills and Big Sister Katie Nielsen. They are recognized for going above and beyond the expectations of a volunteer mentor and were celebrated for the impact they made in the lives of their Littles.
The second annual Arties was held at the Westgate Hotel on Feb. 5 honoring the supporters of San Diego’s arts scene and the annual Mission Federal ArtWalk event. Honorees included Premiere Sponsor, Cymer Corporation, the Little Italy Association, ArtWalk volunteer coordinator Carmen DeBello and Gwen Nichols, a Board Member of ArtWalk’s charity partner, ArtReach. Mission Federal ArtWalk in Little Italy will celebrate its 31st anniversary on Apr. 25/26.
