USO San Diego Receives Major Gift

The Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation has provided $250,000 in support of USO San Diego’s no cost programs that serve military in San Diego. The lounge at the San Diego Neil Ash Airport Center will be renamed the Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation Reception Area in honor of this gift. “This generous gift will enable USO San Diego to continue its mission of supporting our active-duty military and their families with a wide variety of programs that include free dinners, food pantries, therapy dogs, activities that offer comfort to the children of deployed parents, and so much more all in a “home away from home” environment,” said Judy Forrester, USO San Diego CEO.

The Burn Institute Auxiliary is presenting its Inaugural Burn Run 5K. The Burn Institute and Road Runner Sports has scheduled the event for Feb. 7 at the Road Runner Sports on Copley Dr. The run will raise funds for scald prevention.

The Month of a Million Meals campaign was started by Feeding America San Diego, ABC10 and Live Well San Diego to ensure that San Diegans receive nutritious food during the holiday season and throughout the year. San Diegans donated food, time and funds to support those struggling with hunger from Nov. 22 to Dec. 31. This yea a total of $378,916.81 was raised equating to 2,273,501 meals. “The fact that every dollar provides six meals through Feeding America San Diego really struck a chord with our community, who responded to this call to action with incredible compassion,” said Jennifer Gilmore, Executive Director of Feeding America San Diego.

Wells Fargo and Landmark Aviation are sponsors of the Ronald McDonald House Charities 11th Annual Dream House Raffle. The Grand Prize winner chooses either a San Diego Dream House or $2.1 million in cash. Other prizes to be given away include cars, vacations and electronics.

The Rancho Santa Fe Unit of Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary is hosting Circus Nights Gala on Jan. 31 at the Grand Del Mar. Sponsors include Jimmy Choo, VPG, Henebery, Crest and Vitatech. Proceeds will benefit the Sam S. and Rose Stein Emergency Care Center.

San Diego Opera’s 50th Anniversary Opening Night is being held on Jan. 24 beginning with a Pre-Opera Celebration “Toasting 50 Years and Beyond” at the US Grant Hotel. In addition to individuals from 36 states and 7 countries, corporations, government and foundations, the Opera has experienced people coming together to support San Diego Opera. Proceeds from the Pre-Opera Celebration and the Post Opera Cast Party will go to support the future of the Opera and the educational and outreach programs.

The Kiwanis Club of San Diego is hosting the “Drive Out Hunger Golf Classic to benefit the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The tournament is being held at the Maderas Golf Course on Jan 22.

Proceeds will benefit the Food Bank’s hunger-relief programs. “We are asking the golfing community to support this event that will raise funds to help feed hungry seniors, children, families and low-income military families in our community,” said Food Bank President & CEO James Floros.

The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary is sponsoring a 50 year reunion of Women of Elegance and Dedication. A Brunch is being held on Feb. 26 at the Kroc Center Multipurpose Room. All past WOE/WOD from the past 50 years will be honored again for their accomplishments and contributions to the community.
